AHS History

Advances in Horticultural Science (AHS) is a historic journal dedicated to publishing original scientific research across all fields of horticulture. Owned by the University of Florence, it is managed by the Department of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Forestry (DAGRI) and published by Firenze University Press (FUP).

The first issue of AHS was published in 1876 as “Bullettino della Reale Società Toscana di Orticoltura” which converted, in 1938, in “Rivista della Reale Società Orticola Toscana. In 1948 it became “Rivista della Ortoflorofrutticoltura Italiana” published by the University of Florence. Since 1987, AHS is published in English as an international journal with its current name “Advances in Horticultural Science”. Starting from 2000, an electronic version of the journal has been available along with the printed version. In 2012, in collaboration with Florence University Press, significant efforts were made to fine-tune the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform to manage all editorial processes exclusively online. Since 2016 AHS is available only as an electronic open access journal free of charge.

In 2001, through the collaboration with Florence University Press, all past volumes of AHS from 1987 to 1999 were digitized, making the full text available online.

In 2013, an agreement with JSTOR, a non-profit organization serving the academic community, was signed to digitize and index all back issues of AHS dating back to 1876, ensuring digital accessibility to the journal's academic content.
