Abstract
Contrary to general opinion, it is possible to show that the 2nd century BC Greek scribe Akestondas (in Phanias’ epigram AP 6.295) wrote his books on skins of a very innovative quality, not diphtherai, but something like parchment of the kind being manufactured in Pergamum at the time.
