Abstract

Comment, au Mexique, l’héritage colonial fut géré par le régime issu de la révolution (19101920) ? À travers l’analyse ethnographique et historique de deux histoires de fondation écrites avec deux cents ans d’écart dans le village nahuatl de Milpa Alta (Mexico), cet article examine les efforts de l’État pour avoir un monopole sur le passé légitime en « éclipsant » l’héritage colonial en faveur du passé préhispanique, devenu désormais l’héritage national du Mexique.


What Legacy for Which Heirs? Pre-Columbian Past and Colonial Heritage in Mexico's National History

How did the regime born from the Revolution (1910-1920) manage Mexico's colonial heritage? Through ethnographic and historical analysis of two foundation histories written two hundred years apart in the Nahuatl village of Milpa Alta (Mexico City), this article examines the state's efforts to monopolize the legitimate past by "eclipsing" the colonial heritage in favor of the pre-Hispanic past, which thereby became Mexico's national heritage.
