Abstract

The article examines how the Great Terror manifested within the Soviet education system, focusing on a conflict between teachers and Komsomol organizers. It explores how, amidst intensifying state repression, what began as ordinary interdepartmental tensions quickly escalated into a political confrontation. While teachers sought to preserve the school’s educational mission, Komsomol activists attempted to embroil the school in political purges. The teachers’ victory over the Komsomol organizers was achieved through means legitimized by the state terror – such as denunciations, the application of ideological labels, and the expulsion of opponents from the school community. Nevertheless, this victory undermined the impact of the Great Terror on schools and students. Thanks to the position taken by teachers, the school avoided the influence of destructive societal processes and largely succeeded in preserving the younger generation’s trust in the system, including that of most children whose parents had been arrested.
