AH News: XV National Congress of the Societas Herpetologica Italica in Perugia

2024-09-04

The XV National Congress of the Societas Herpetologica Italica will take place from September 17 to 21, 2024, at the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Sciences (DSA3) of the University of Perugia. The event will gather leading experts and researchers in herpetology for an intense program of scientific sessions, discussions, and field visits.

The Congress will commence on Tuesday, September 17, with a guided tour of the DSA3’s medieval garden and botanical garden, followed by the opening of the registration desk and the display of scientific posters. The core of the Congress, however, will be the scientific sessions held from Wednesday, September 18 to Friday, September 20, covering various aspects of herpetology. Topics include Ecology, Ethology and Conservation, Faunistics, Biogeography, Taxonomy, and Evolution, among others. Each session will feature oral presentations limited to 10 minutes, including time for questions, ensuring a dynamic and engaging exchange of ideas.

Highlighting the program are two plenary lectures. On Wednesday, Mathieu Denoël will discuss the direct and indirect effects of biological invasions in amphibian breeding ponds, while Thursday’s session will feature Eva Ringler on what amphibians can teach us about the evolution of parental care. Two roundtable discussions are also scheduled: one on the screening and health management in herpetofauna conservation programs, and another on the conservation efforts for Emys orbicularis in Italy.

On Thursday, participants will visit Lake Trasimeno, including a tour of the reproductive centers for Emys orbicularis and Bombina variegata pachypus, followed by a herpetological auction and a social dinner. The Congress will conclude on Saturday with a social excursion to the Sibillini Mountains National Park, offering a unique opportunity to observe the Orsini's viper (Vipera ursinii) in its natural habitat.

The Congress is set to be an inspiring gathering for herpetologists and conservationists, offering ample opportunities for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration. We look forward to seeing you in Perugia!
