AH News: National Congress “Biology and Conservation of Urodeles”
With a latitudinal extension of almost 1300 km and an altitude spanning from 0 to 4810 meters above sea level, the Italian peninsula is extremely rich in habitat and ecological niches, which support an astonishing biodiversity. In particular, Urodeles richness is remarkably high: the Italian herpetological atlas lists 19 species of salamanders, newts and cave salamanders. Ten of them are strictly endemic species, with very limited home ranges.
In order to celebrate this extraordinary biodiversity, the SHI (Societas Herpetologica Italica) has supported the organization of the 1st National Congress on the Biology and Conservation of Urodeles, that will take place in Chiavari (in the province of Genoa) on October 26th and 27th. During the meeting, the most recent studies regarding the conservation and biology of Urodeles species, both in Italy and worldwide, will be presented. In addition, special awards will be granted to the best studies carried out by young herpetologists (under the age of 30).
