Abstract
The article examines the role of the apparition of the Tiber in Book VIII of the Aeneid within the legendary traditions and compositional stratifications concerning Aeneas’ arrival in Latium and his role as a founding hero. Besides, the ancient and modern exegesis of the half-line 8.41 concessere deum and of the expression rumore secundo of 8.90 is discussed in the light of the complex intertextual texture of the episode.
