Abstract

Diogenes’ Apista must have been quite complex in their structure. The story of Dercyllis and Mantinias was absolutely ‘incredible’, but it was preceded and followed by several other episodes. Diogenes was later than Ninos’ Novel (II-I cent. BC) and was roughly Chariton’s contemporary. His novel was constructed with the aid of very common topoi, and was utilized by Iamblichus and Heliodorus for some enrichment of the patterns of the novelistic genre.
