Abstract
In the proem to his fourth book, Manilius compares Metellus, pontifex maximus in 241 BC, who saved from fire the sacred images preserved in Vesta’s shrine, to Aeneas who did the same with the Trojan Penates. This parallel was in all likelihood traditional.
