Abstract

The story of Eumolpus and the Thraces in Strabo Geogr. VII 7.1 cannot go back to Hecataeus. Probably Euripides, in his lost tragedy Erectheus, was induced by political reasons to substitute the Thraces for the Eleusinians (at his time a traditional part of Athenian population) in the story of the war between Erectheus and Eumolpus, probably making use of ancient genealogical traditions.
