Abstract

After the death of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the Romans’ attempt to weaken Seleucid power by destroying the ships and killing the elephants sparked the wrath of the Syrian people. This led to the murder of Cn. Octavius at Laodicea: Polybius’ book 31 appears to be quite a reliable source on these events.
