AbstractChrysippus (SVF II 1181), apparently echoing Cleanthes (SVF I 566), states that the universe is like a literary work, whose overall beauty may well justify the imperfection of some parts. This same concept underlies the prologue of Aelius Aristides’ prose hymn to Sarapis, championing the superiority of prose over poetry.
