Abstract

Exploiting the Stoic concept of κοσμόπολις, Manilius compares the well-ordered heaven to a well-ordered city, both of which are rationally organized, and traces a hierarchical distinction between the brightest stars and the smaller ones, sine nomine turba. His ideal state is a conservative, aristocratic one.
