Abstract

The idea of practical virtue sketched by Ps.-Archytas, De educ. 2.41.16-18, in opposition to Stoicism, fits well the cultural climate of the early Imperial period. The apparent inconsistency at De leg. 1.33.17-18, by the same author, is probably due to a lacuna in the transmitted text.
