Abstract

In Sophocles, Tr. 101 the expression δισσαῖσιν ἀπείροις κλιθείς does not just refer to the Pillars of Heracles, but evokes the theme of pillars and narrow passages as a gate to the Underworld, well attested in mythology and folklore: cf. Samson, Atlas, and the Sun-god.
