Abstract

Callimachus’ hymn to Demeter is more complex than it appears and presents old concepts in a new light. The reason for hunger is reinterpreted by the poet: Demeter does punish Erysichthon not by depriving him of the goods she gives to human beings, but by leaving him amply provided with food, but unable to be satisfied. Maybe there is an allusion, with a touch of humor, to the religious spirit that may be detected in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter.
