Abstract
The text of an epigraphic epitaph supports the interpretation of primus natalis in Lygdamus 5.17-18 as the date of birth. On the basis of a similar comparison, the last verse of Horace’s Ode I.1 seems devoid of irony and the verb ferio should be interpreted with the strong meaning of hitting. CLE 995.6 is clearly influenced by Cicero’s poem De temporibus meis.
