Abstract
Some untypical features of Quintus’ poem – such as the lack of a proem and the uncommon number of books (fourteen) – are best explained assuming that its parts were originally written for poetical contests at both Smyrna and other Greek cities of the Near East, and that Quintus himself later assembled them into a continuous work.Metrics
