Abstract

In the preface to his novel, Longus tacitly refutes both Plato’s aversion to mimetic art (Resp. 601a-602b) and Thucydides’ dislike for fiction (1.22), at the same time defining his own literary agenda through the fusion of three genres, i.e. comedy, pastoral, and erotic novel.
