Hermes e Cristo in Nonno

Abstract

In several passages of Nonnus’ Paraphrase of St John’s Gospel, the description of Jesus’ epiphanies recalls those of Hermes, who, as psychopomp and good shepherd, is a sort of prefiguration of Christ. This also leads to an overall reconsideration of the influence of the Hermetic tradition on Nonnus’ poems.
