Abstract

An analysis of the characters of Amata and Turnus in the light of the final section of Origo gentis Romanae 13 shows that Vergil was well acquainted with minor annalistic traditions, though he did not hesitate to modify the myth according to his own poetic agenda (as with the suicide of the queen, hanging herself like a tragic heroine).
