Abstract

An analysis of the occurrences of the word ὑποφήτωρ shows that in Ap. Rh. 1.22 it does not mean just ‘messenger’, but someone who both transmits and elucidates a given message. From this point of view, the Muses embody Apollonius’ literary and aesthetic principles.
