Alternative scenarios in Sophocles’ <i>Electra</i>

Abstract

The device of foreshadowing a major mythical innovation, and then not going through with it, is frequently employed in Greek tragedy. Sophocles uses it in several plays, especially in the Electra, where he envisages two non-traditional possibilities: a matricide by Electra and a revenge without any matricide.
