Abstract
In De sacerd. I 1-5, John Chrysostom uses the topic of friendship as presented by Gregory of Nazianzus in his funeral oration for Basil the Great. It is clear that there is imitation, and the assumption that John’s Basil must be taken as an imaginary character is thereby confirmed. Gregory was the first Christian writer to talk about friendship between two men without reference to Christian love, and John Chrysostom contributed to spread elements of ancient sensibility within Christian tradition and topics.
