Un’espressione ingiuriosa greca in Seneca (<i>vervex marinus</i>: const. 17.1)

Published September 10, 2015

Abstract

This abusive phrase of unclear meaning must be understood in the light of Vita Aesopi W 24, showing that a ‘sea ram’ (θαλάσσιον πρόβατον, θαλάσσιος τράγος) is not a fish or another swimming animal, but a ram drowned in the water, i.e. a very stupid creature.
