Abstract

Thomas Tyrwhitt, editor of Chaucer, whose repentance on his death-bed was well known, was the first critic who saw in Euripides’ Bacchae a sort of palinody by the dramatist. This interpretation may have been prompted by this episode of Chaucer’s life.
