Defining heroes as ‘descended from demigods’, Theocritus (17.5) seems to have in mind the Simonidean phrase ἡμιθέων ὠκύμορον γενεήν (fr. 11.17 West2), while slightly changing its meaning. On a broader level, Simonides’ elegy appears to be Theocritus’ main model for the proem of his Encomium of Ptolemy Philadelphus.
