Abstract
Diocletian’s reforms (between 292 and 296 A.D.) are a terminus ante quem for Xenophon Ephesius’ Ephesiaca, though in all likelihood this work was written at a quite earlier date. In Eph. 5.8.1 and 5.10.1 the readings Νουκέριον and Νουκερίῳ must be retained; the reference is not to ‘Nocera dei Pagani’, but to ‘Nocera Terinese’. Clisthenes’ adoption by Hippothoos (5.15.4) reflects the Roman, rather than the Greek legal system.
