Abstract
In the Greek syntax, when a negative appears together with a participle and a finite verb, it may refer either to the latter or to the former: never to both. That is why, in the first lines of Pindar’s seventh Nemean ode, where the negative refers only to the participle, but not to ἐλάχομεν, the finite verb has no sense and must be corrected to ἐλάθομεν.Metrics
