Abstract

At Plato, Protagoras 319a-b the text should read οὐκ <ἂν> ᾤμην. The particle has been displaced from later in the sentence, where it is universally acknowledged to be intrusive. Politeness theory is invoked to explain the counterfactual as a face-saving device.
