Abstract

In the story of Dionysus’ madness told by Nonnus in D. 35, the poet replaces Rheia with Hera in the role of the healer. A trace of this replacement is visible in the epithet Euantetos, traditionally referred to Rheia in the Orphic Hymns and in some epigraphs. On the contrary, Nonnus ascribes it to Hera in D. 35.316.
