Abstract
A new examination of Mart. 12.98 suggests adopting albula (not Albula) at line 4, and identifying the navigerum iter mentioned in the same line with the upstream journey on the Baetis river that Instanius, Martial’s patron and Hispania Baetica’s new governor, will undertake to reach Corduba, the provincial capital. The upstream journey prompts the governor’s eulogistic pairing with Aeneas, who in Aeneid 8 also travels upstream on the Tiber.
