Abstract

Richard Bentley, in his 1711 edition of Horace, advanced suspects on the text of Ep. 2.1.114-117. The manuscripts agree in the reading medicorummedici which would, according to Bentley, be corrupt, as the craft of the physician has already been mentioned. But the transmitted text can be defended: the examples chosen by Horace follow a scheme employed in the Socratic dialogues of Plato and Xenophon, and the argument could in particular be influenced by Pl. Ion 53c6-d1.
