Abstract
The article aims to examine key aspects of Franco Fortini’s theatrical experience, starting from his problematic relationship with dramatic forms. Fortini shows a clear awareness of a generational estrangement of Italian writers from the theatre, a distance that helps explain his later silence about – or retrospective devaluation of – his own stage works. Through the analysis of early plays and archival materials, the essay demonstrates that his dramatic production of the 1930s and 1940s was not a marginal episode. In particular, it highlights his early dialogue with the Ibsenian tradition and the central role of the unfinished tragedy Andrea e il Presidente in the genesis of Foglio di via e altri versi (1946).
