Abstract

An Interpretation of Costantine-Cyril's Poem for Gregory of Nazianz

In this article the author discusses Vereščagin’s paper, which focuses on the meaning of the word ýêî (Gregory ýêî cherub) in Constantine-Cyril’s poem for Gregory of Nazianz. Vereščagin thinks that the meaning of the phrase is the substantial identity of angels and humans. The author researching thought about angels and humans in the works of the Byzantine philosophers (Pseudo-Dionysios Areopagites, Maximos the Confessor, John Damascene) disagrees with Vereščagin’s point of view. The word ýêî in the poem is only a poetic comparison between Gregory and angels.
