Abstract

Marin Držić and His Characters in the Everyday Life of Renaissance Dubrovnik

This paper aims to shift the focus of attention from Držić’s fi ctional world to the playwright’s experience and reality, but also his living models viewed from the perspective of the history of everyday life traced in the archival documents of the Dubrovnik Republic, filed at the State Archives in Dubrovnik. The presence of Držić and his characters in archival sources confi rms the literary signifi cance of the historical documents, offering yet another interpretation of Držić’s literary work.
