Abstract

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.), a plant in the Malvaceae family, is of vital importance because its leaves, calyxes and seeds are all consumed. However, this species is still absent from genetic improvement programs in Burkina Faso. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of its genetic potential and how this potential is expressed under agro-ecological intensification conditions in a real environment. To do this, six genotypes were tested with cropping practices such as organic fertilization and sowing densities. Qualitative and quantitative traits were measured, as well as the susceptibility of genotypes to attacks by jassids. The results revealed differences in the color, shape and physiological characteristics of the plants. Genotypes differed in growth cycle length, with HSE6 showing a shorter cycle and HSE1 a longer cycle. HSE4 and HSE5 were identified as the most productive. Cultivation practices had a significant influence: a sowing density of 0.4 m x 0.6 m and fertilization with poultry droppings (6000 kg/ha) gave the best performance. Conversely, the absence of fertilization adversely affected plant growth. Assessment of the damage caused by jassids shows uniformity of attack, with damage rates ranging from 26% to 50%. The impact of jassids should be studied in greater depth and more resistant genotypes should be explored.
