Abstract
Franco Fortini’s final creative period is characterized by intense project planning: among his numerous “works in progress”, a collection of essays on foreign literatures stands out for its degree of completeness. The collection was titled Saggi stranieri, through which Fortini aspired to construct another self-portrait as a critic-translator. This contribution aims to illustrate the stratigraphy of the essay project from a macrogenetic perspective. It begins by providing an overview of various documentary evidence regarding the collection’s configuration, shedding light on Fortini’s planning practices as a “constructor of collections”. Particular attention is paid to the author’s penchant for indexing, which served not only to hierarchize and enumerate contributions but also to establish a preliminary aggregative structure.
