Abstract

The ancient city walls of Florence are today an important as well as little known and valued architectural heritage of the town. The city walls that we see today are the overlapping of traces and circuits that have formed over the centuries the main signal of the Forma Urbis, till the break of the nineteenth century, when the entire north branch of the river was demolished and replaced by drive boulevards, flanked by the city gates, which were left with the monumental urban landmark function. This paper presents the contribution of the architecture’s survey and the representation in multidimensional visual languages of the urban complex in the framework of the project Firenze Mura- FiMU. In this project the virtual heritage could contribute to the recovery of the symbolic dimension of the Florentine walls to promoting more sustainable forms of enhancement also useful for mitigating the effects of overtourism on the city.
