Abstract

This contribution offers a critical reflection on restoration practices at the UNESCO site of Ivrea, a 20th-century industrial city, gained through involvement in the restoration of buildings emblematic of Olivetti architecture. Recent experiences on buildings of historical, architectural and symbolic importance - Officine ICO, Centro Servizi Sociali, ex SERTEC - are presented to focus on technical and conservation choices and the critical issues in managing changes of use, material modifications and the coexistence of functional requirements and conservation needs. At the centre is the construction site as a space for verification and knowledge, where the theory of modern restoration is measured against operational challenges. The theme of the balance between philological conservation and compliance with regulations on energy efficiency, safety and comfort recurs. What emerges is the complexity of a relationship to be negotiated between conservation and transformation, between the protection of historical and cultural value and regulatory innovation.
