Abstract

The linguistic peculiarities of the translation of “Latin” books in the 1499 Gennadij Bible

The purpose of this article is to reconstruct and interpret the principles of translation in the 1499 Gennadij Bible. This reconstruction speaks for the high linguistic quality of this translation, the work of the Dominican monk Veniamin. His translation can be considered an original textual codification of Church Slavonic. However, Veniamin’s codification conflicted with the use of contemporary Church Slavonic texts. Some non-standard grammatical forms in the Gennadij Bible are the result of translation from Latin according to homonymous principles. Most of the incorrect forms depend not so much on Latin, as on the impact of the Italian lingua vernacula (“vol’gare” or “frjazhskij”, known to Veniamin). Grammatical forms were mainly translated in the Gennadij Bible through analogy with volgare. Finally, the author speculates on the possibility of not a German, but an Italian edition of the Vulgate having been used for the Gennadij Bible translation.
