Abstract
The contribution is based on the results of a research carried out at the Piombino steel mill during a period characterized by a deep crisis that led to the plants closure. However, the background of the analysis is not the blast furnace, the undisputed realm of the producer worker, but bathrooms, kitchens and refectories where the workers are became users and the key figure are women employed in restauration and janitory services. The analysis abandons the productive heart of the factory, characterized by industrial and Fordist work, to move in the adjoining space where the provision of services is accompanied by subcontracting, fragmentation of working time and the precariousness of the wage earner.
