Abstract
The construction of the church of San Benedetto in Via del Gazometro in Rome is a notable example of early 20^(th)-century design in relation to existing buildings, representing a complex evolutionary process spanning about forty years. The church's unique reconstruction trajectory allows us to examine the design approach of Clemente Busiri Vici, who was tasked with coordinating a new intervention on an autograph architecture in a short period of time. The first foundation, built by Costantino Schneider in 1925, was short-lived due to structural damage, leading to a new project being formulated by Busiri Vici in 1935. Less than a decade later, the Ostiense bombing destroyed the building, leading to reconstruction in 1947, again entrusted to Busiri Vici. In the urgency of the situation, he found himself revising the previous two versions.
