Abstract

The preservation of archaeological sites in Egypt offers many perspectives of research. Not always, the immense amount of archaeological studies is balanced by an adequate attention to the material preservation. An interdisciplinary group, coordinated by the University of Florence is developing a research project on materials, building technologies and decay phenomena in different archaeological sites of Middle Egypt. The city of Antinoe is a very representative case study. The complexity of technologies and materials, along with the natural and human causes of damage, create an heterogeneous overall picture of the conservation state. The monitoring of weathering parameters and phenomena, shows many critical situations quickly evolving, in addition to manmade damage which are becoming always more serious. One of the directions of research is the study of sustainable conservation solutions that aim to renew the links between the local people and their heritage.
