Abstract

For the Tenth Anniversary of the Death of the Slovenian Etymologist France Bezlaj

The paper analyzes the book published to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the death of the well known Slovenian linguist and etymologist France Bezlaj (1910-1993). The two volumes, bearing the title France Bezlaj. Zbrani jezikoslovni spisi, were edited by Metka Furlan, who was one of his closest collaborators, and were printed in Ljubljana (2003) by the Scientifi c Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Science (ZRC – SAZU). Among the many articles and essays printed in the 1500 pages of the volumes, special mention should be made of the first two volumes of the Slovenian Etymological Dictionary. This work remained unfi nished after Bezlaj’s death, but it has fortunately been completed by M. Furlan and Marko Snoj on the basis of records previously collected by Bezlaj himself. Thanks to this publication, specialists are now able to acquire exact knowledge of the development of the scientifi c investigation of the Slovenian etymologist and to evaluate his many innovative contributions to the subject.
