Abstract
Vittorio S. Tomelleri
A relevant contribution to the debate about Bulgarian aspect
The article presents and critically discusses a recent book by Maria Stambolieva, Building up aspect. A study of aspect and related categories in Bulgarian, with parallels in English and French, published in 2008. In the analysis, conducted within a generative framework, a data-oriented approach to the study of a single language is chosen. The main topic of the book is the interpretation of the morphological/grammatical category of aspect in Bulgarian. After quite an extensive historical introduction about this aspectually very intriguing language and its main linguistic features, Stambolieva tackles some relevant and complex issues, such as the defi nition of aspect, its relationship with the so-called Aktionsarten (Modes of Action), as well as the correlation between aspect, on the one hand, and Tense and Mood, on the other.
