Abstract

This paper adopts the principles of secularly inspired pedagogy as an interpretative framework for analyzing inequalities in higher education. Drawing on OECD data on the intergenerational transmission of educational attainment in Italy, it problematizes the gap between the expansion of university access and the realization of genuinely equitable conditions for participation and success. Through cultural capital theory and the concept of institutional habitus, it highlights how educational institutions valorize unevenly distributed dispositions. The experience of first-generation students provides a privileged point of observation, as it reveals the tensions between structural constraints and the room for agency. In this light, a secularly inspired pedagogy can contribute to questioning the implicit mechanisms of exclusion and promoting educational practices oriented toward reflexivity and the democratization of academic contexts.
