Abstract

In the design process, selecting materials is a determining factor to define morphological, performance and financial aspects. By means of sensory features, other materials can then be selected to characterise spaces and convey information (wayfinding). This paper illustrates a research study on museum buildings funded by ‘Sapienza University of Rome’, and supported by the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali1, with the purpose of identifying a wayfinding design methodology and establishing an archive of materials and technical solutions (that can be digitised), selected by modification scale and by sensory features. The assessment of results from a sample of three museums, selectedfrom the set of the ‘Musei in Comune’2 in Rome, is currently being performed.
