A proposito di Æstimum e dell’origine della parola estimo

Abstract

Starting from the header of the Aestimum journal (published in Milan by Aldo Pagani between 1956 and 1974) that included a passage by Festasio regarding the origin of the latin word, this contribution shows how the hypothesis of its derivation from aes + tyme, widely spread among appraisers, can not be accepted. Moreover, latin etymologists could not formulate an alternative, plausible and unanimous proposal, and the origin of the word remains unknown.
