Abstract
Around the mid 1980’s, the appealing perspective of the plan for built environment came out of the debate on the themes of building restoration. Since then different changes of cultural and normative context occurred. The contribution explores such dynamics, enucleating and deepening three matters - knowledge, responsibility, service life - that, in their trend, have contributed and still contribute to redraw scientific, technical and operational frontiers of relationship between maintenance and transformation. Thereby the paper faces some of the crux that allow a critical observation of the development dynamics of the idea, and of its meaning, concerns what is still today decodable as plan for built environment.
